An integrated understanding of the rapid metabolic benefits of a carbohydrate-restricted diet on hepatic steatosis in humans
We show that the diet improves liver fat metabolism, promotes rapid shifts in the gut microbiota, increases circulating folate, and upregulates expression of genes involved in folate-dependent one carbon metabolism in the liver.

Microbially produced imidazole propionate impairs insulin signaling through mTORC1
Ara Koh et al identify imidazole propionate as a microbially produced histidine-derived metabolite that is present at higher concentrations in subjects with versus without type 2 diabetes.

Metformin alters the gut microbiome of individuals with treatment-naive type 2 diabetes, contributing to the therapeutic effects of the drug
Our findings provide support for the notion that altered gut microbiota mediates some of metformin's antidiabetic effects.

Linking microbiota to human diseases: a systems biology perspective
We discuss how systems biology approaches combined with new experimental technologies may disentangle some of the mechanistic details in the complex interactions of diet, microbiota, and host metabolism.

The quest for a unified view of bacterial land colonization
We hypothesize that bacterial land colonization is dominated by a single-gene sweep, that is, the emergence of dnaE2 derived from an early duplication event of the primordial dnaE。

On the molecular mechanism of GC content variation among eubacterial genomes
Further investigation led to the discovery that two major mutator genes, polC and dnaE2, may be responsible for genomic GC content variation.

Strand-biased gene distribution in bacteria is related to both horizontal gene transfer and strand-biased nucleotide composition
We propose that strand-biased nucleotide composition plays a decisive role for strand-biased gene distribution.
